As a follow up to the article on the use of solar lighting during the aftermath of the tornado destruction in the south, we would be remiss not to mention Westinghouse solar lighting. We mentioned that we purchased inexpensive solar powered garden lights at the local WalMart, spending less than $10.00 per light. (We have since found them cheaper online, but we were in a pinch and desperate for light.) We failed to mention that the lights we selected were made by Westinghouse. By no means are we discounting other brands. Instead, we are offering our experiences with the Westinghouse product.
As stated in the previous article, the solar lights served us well. We staked the lights in the yard during the daylight hours — a full day of sunlight. What worked well for two days and nights seemed to be coming to an end. On the third day following the tornado, the sky remained cloudy all day, occasionally sprinkling rain until afternoon when a thunder storm rumbled through. Needless to say, there was a mass rush for flashlight batteries. No one expected the solar lights to work following a day without sunshine. We never even took the lights to the yard because of the rain.
For those who have not purchased batteries lately, the cost for a pack of batteries was more than the cost of a single solar light. We were delighted to pay the price for the batteries — anything to provide a little light in the pitch black darkness of night. As night fell and darkness began to surround us, it was noticed that the Westinghouse solar lighting units were burning as brightly as they had the night before. Of course, none in the family was aware that the lights were manufactured by Westinghouse until the next day.
Again, we are not discounting the other brands of solar lights. We are speaking from experience in recommending the Westinghouse brand. The small solar garden lights held a bright light for over 48 hours. Staked out into the yard on the following day, there was only brief and intermittent sunlight, but we will report that our solar lights again burned with full brilliance during the entire night.
Our lights are not nearly so decorative as those we have selected below, nor were the ones we purchased “extra brilliant”.
