Solar Garden Lights

in Solar Lights for the Garden

Solar lights have become a favorite in landscaped garden areas.  As the sun goes down solar lights will begin to deliver a soft glow that will last in most cases from sundown to sun up.

Some of the major benefits of solar lights are that they are easy to installEach of the lights is an individual unit.  Installation usually includes only staking the light into the ground.  Most solar lights for the garden come with a pointed post which only requires a good push into the selected spot.

Solar lights for the garden are weather resistant and can withstand rain, sleet and snow. If properly installed, pushed deep enough into the ground, they will be resistant to wind.  Lights not secured to the full depth of the point may tilt in heavy winds.

The garden lights are especially good in areas that have no access to electricity.  Perhaps, this is the best selling point.  Electric lights require digging up the yard in order to run lights from one area to the next.  With the solar garden lights, one only need to select the point of needed light and push the light into place. However, to get the maximum benefit of the solar lights in the garden area, they should not be placed under trees or in any area where they will not get a full day’s worth of sunshine.

Most solar garden lights are no more than three feet tall and as such offer no overhead light.  Instead, the light seems to be displayed downward and focuses on a small area on the ground while providing soft gentle light to the surrounding area.  At the present time, in the full darkness of night solar garden lights are best to offer soft light as accents or to add to the general ambiance of the landscape.  Of course, to get more benefit from the lights, they can be placed closer together.  However, since most are used for decorative landscaping purposes there is no necessity to place them too close together.  Most gardeners and landscapers prefer the occasional decorative light to accent a specific area in the dark.

If there are disadvantages to solar lights for the garden they would be that they offer low level light, probably not sufficient for a walk after nightfall and since the posts are not usually cemented in place they are easily stolen.

As with so many products, you get what you pay for.  Solar garden lights purchased at the local discount stores generally look cheap and are made of plastic.  Many manufacturers offer solar landscape lights made of metal or wood, but at prices higher than one would pay in a lower end retail store.

If ordering online, it is recommended that one inquire as to the weight (the gauge) of the metal before purchasing.  Sometimes the pictures look much better than the real thing.  Also, it is wise to ask about the light output and if the lights are LED.  LED lights have been found to produce better and brighter light.

At the present time, unless the solar garden lights are made to your personal specification, one can expect lighting sufficient for low level disbursement to be used primarily as decorative lighting.
